The ICDE Prize of Excellence was inaugurated in 1999 as the global prize of excellence in open and distance education. ICDE is pleased to announce that ICDE Prizes of Excellence will be awarded in October 2017, at the 27th ICDE World Conference in Toronto, Canada, to deserving institutions and individuals for the highest possible excellence in the fields of open and distance education.

Invitation: Institutional members of ICDE that already have activities in Learning Analytics (LA), are invited to take part in the ICDE Cluster for Learning Analytics.

A number of ICDE members are taking up Learning Analytics, and it is suggested that Learning Analytics has a great potential for improving quality outcomes of higher education. Members who have entered in to the field with a strategic approach and/or already have activities related to Learning Analytics are therefore invited to take part in the ICDE Cluster. The idea is to foster expertise, collaboration and leadership, and to promote good practice for other interested and newcomers to the field.


OLC: Digital Learning Innovation Award

Online Learning Consortium (OLC) hosts an annual award showcasing the exemplary use of digital courseware to improve student success, especially among minority, first-generation and other underrepresented student groups. With a focused lens on increasing the number of undergraduate students who complete foundation or gateway courses, the award will recognize projects that inspire innovation, increase access, support implementation, improve outcomes, enable accessibility, and promote sustainability in the use of digital courseware.

ICDE is seeking authors to write the second paper in our Insight series on the topic of State of the nation: blended learning. Insight papers are between 5 -7.000 words long and written in an accessible language style for a wide audience. Authors and researchers should be considered by their peers as experts in the field and may not necessarily be ICDE members.

ICDE moves to new office premises

From Friday 31 March, ICDE will relocate to a new office premises closer to Oslo city centre. The new modern office space will provide the ICDE Secretariet with the facilities to better meet the needs of its members with space for meetings and faster travel options for visitors.

University of Guadalajara SUV: Mexican children simulate aerospace rescue on Mars

The Virtual University System of the University of Guadalajara, Mexico realizes the first edition of R2T2 Caribbean and America

Twenty-four children, from different public and private schools, collaborated in the simulation of a rescue from an alleged aerospace accident on Mars as part of R2T2 Caribbean and America, a meeting coordinated by the Virtual University System of the University of Guadalajara, which seeks to promote collaboration in the solution of technological problems.

The children showed their skills in strategy, coordination and programming to solve a study case in which 16 robots, remotely managed by children aged 8 to 12 from different countries of the continent, sought to enter a supposed A generator damaged by a meteorite crash on Mars, which was represented by a simulation robot, located in a laboratory in Switzerland.

ICDE building networks at the 39th SEAMEO High Officials Meeting (39th SEAMEO HOM)

ICDE was represented by ICDE Secretary General, Gard Titlestad at the 39TH SEAMEO High Officials Meeting that was held on 15-17 November 2016 at Amari Watergate Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand. 

The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) of which ICDE is an affiliated member, is a regional intergovernmental organization established in 1965 among governments of Southeast Asian countries to promote regional cooperation in education, science and culture in the region.


ICDE Secretary General, Gard Titlestad, presented on the global challenges on the occasion of the signing of an agreement to give life to the ‘Academy of Civilizations’

The story of ' Crossing the digital flow' was presented by ICDE Secretary General, Gard Titlestad and was discussed with university leaders at the International Association for Universities´ Conference in Bangkok. After having introduced technologies relevant for education that are flowing into society, their opportunities and challenges, the presentation goes on to discuss trends in the era of digitalisation and how to meet with them, in particular trends in online, open and flexible higher education. A stepwise approach together with knowledge sharing and peer learning is advised.

Siberia is melting for Open Education

This year, Siberia has experienced unique progress. In Yakutsk, the capital of the Republic of Sakha (formerly called Yakutia) and the only city worldwide built on permafrost, the government was launching a hot season: The International Lensky Education Forum was heating the debate about open education. The forum in cooperation with UNESCO was organized for the first time and concluded one year of first innovative activities with a series of events. "We appreciate the strong support of the Yakutian government for open education fully conforming with UNESCO's objective", said Dr. David Atchoarena, UNESCO Director for Policies and Lifelong Learning Systems.

Series of 6 ICDE webinars in 2016/2017, by leading figures in the field of Open from around the world

ICDE prepares a series of 6 Webinars where the primary target group is the ICDE individual members. Nevertheless all ICDE members and ICDE community is welcome to join. The webinars will be held in the last part of 2016, first part of 2017 and will be hosted by internationally renowned experts in the field. The chosen topics are “Challenges for leadership in open and distance education”, “Challenges for quality in open and distance education”, “Supporting students for success in open and distance education”, “Co-developing strategies for rural and remote communities”, “Open education: what is really happening?” and “Changing pedagogies for open education” 

The first webinar will be held on November 11, 9h00 Oslo time on the topic of "Challenges for leadership in open and distance education". It will be hosted by Tian Belawati, rector of Universitas Terbuka (ICDE institutional member) and chaired by Alan Tait, Executive Committee individual member.
